How long does it take to build good credit?

Question by Work and School: How long does it take to build good credit?
I want to apply for this new citi bank rewards credit card. They say you have to have good credit in order to get approved. I’m 19, I’ve had a student credit for 7 months. I have always paid the bill on time and just got my credit line increased. Some people say it takes 6 months to build good credit, is that really true?

Best answer:

Answer by Josh
Good credit 6 months to a year.. much longer to build excelent credit. It all dependa on how hard you work on it, it takes more than just paying your bills on time but that will at least get your credit good. To get it better than good though you need to understand what works for you and against you.. to much to list on here but you can do a search and find it all fairly easily. I had a 730 by the time I was 20 but I worked hard to get it there.

How long will it take to regain good credit report?

Question by Nella: How long will it take to regain good credit report?
My boyfriend knew he had bad credit but didn’t know what was in his credit report. He got his report off of one of those free websites. He has a couple of collection items on it. When he pays them back, how long will it take to come off his credit report? Also, when will credit card companies trust him enough to give a credit card after he pays back his debts?

Best answer:

Answer by Ryan M
It takes 7 years for a reported item to come off of a credit report. This is done on purpose. Depending on just how bad his credit is, it might be several years before he can get another credit card. Banks are really cracking down on giving cards to people with a history of being financially irresponsible.

How long does it take to bring up your credit score, pay today, good credit tomorrow?

Question by rhsjr_25: How long does it take to bring up your credit score, pay today, good credit tomorrow?
If you have bad credit, but you pay all of your debts, how long would it be before you have good credit? Does it happen overnight?

Best answer:

Answer by kimpenn09
No. If you had any delinquent accounts, they would stay on your record for–wait for it–7 years.

That’s not to say your credit wouldn’t improve in the interim. Credit issuers report to credit agencies every 30-60 days or so. And the further away you are from your debt, the higher your credit score will go. Six months from now, your credit should be drastically improved if you don’t have any more delinquencies. Your score is constantly fluctuating based on how you use credit–not just how much you spend, but how many accounts you open, how late you are with your payments, etc.

I use a credit monitoring system through Equifax.com. For $ 7 a month, they text message me every time my score changes.

I believe that you will need to show on time payments six months in a row before the account will be used as a positive credit reference.

How long does it take to fix a credit score?

Question by ←Shea→: How long does it take to fix a credit score?
I am about $ 5,000 in debt (NONE OF WHICH IS FROM A CREDIT CARD…I’VE NEVER HAD ONE) and my credit score is a lot lower than I would like it to be. Most of my balance is either medical or utility.

If I pay a $ 100 balance with a doctors office how much will it raise my score? Or in general if I pay anything off on my credit report how much does it raise the score?

Best answer:

Answer by SCH
Paying $ 100 out of $ 5000 will not raise your score significantly…here is the FICO score breakdown

35% Payment History
30% Amounts Owed
15% Length of Credit History
10% New Credit
10% Types of Credit

If you cleared up the $ 5000 that would help, but you have two other problems…your payment history is not good (you basically stated the only things on your report are negative) and the types of credit are not good.

What you need to do is get some credit and use it responsibly… this means charging no more than 50% of the available credit and making all payment on time.

Q&A: How long after I use credit will it take to have a credit report?

Question by Zachary Keller: How long after I use credit will it take to have a credit report?
I am 18, and some services such as PayPal and SmartyPig require a credit history in order to verify your identity. I was wondering if I was to go out today and get a credit card or sign up for a store credit card how long would it be till the credit bureaus have me in their database?

Best answer:

Answer by Winston2
Most credit cards and store credit cards report monthly. If you got a card today and used it right away, that would be enough for them to report. However, they would not report it until after your first payment due date. Basically, it would be more than a month before anything was on your report but probably closer to two months.

How long after paying off collections will it take to improve my credit score?

Question by Rebecca: How long after paying off collections will it take to improve my credit score?
I wish someone would have told me when I was younger all the things that would affect my credit score, and how important that is!!! So here’s my story…I moved out of an apartment before my lease expired, and I was charged aproximately $ 5k, which was rent for the remainder of my lease. I didn’t pay it, so it went to collections and was reported to all 3 bureau’s. In addition to that, I had about $ 2k more debt (medical) that also went to collections. I recently took out an auto loan (against a truck I already own) to pay off this debt, plus some other expenses that came up without warning. So, how long will it take for my credit score to improve now that my debts are settled? I have 3 credit cards that are paid on time (in full) every month, and my auto loan will be paid on time every month. The only other credit history I have is an auto loan that is paid in full (all payments were made on time). Currently my credit score is 545, I would like to see it in the 600′s ASAP!

If you are back on track, you should see improvement (and credit card offers) very soon–about a year.
